Agriculture Innovation using Remote Sensing (AIRS)

Combine AI and remote sensing for agricultural monitoring of grape leaves
Monitor grape leaves in vineyards using satellite imagery from the European Space Agency
Use high-resolution UAV images to enhance the resolution of Sentinel-2 satellite images
Develop super-resolution methods using AI techniques like GANs and CNNs
Automatically extract phytosanitary metrics to identify plant water needs
Provide information to optimize irrigation practices and increase climate resilience
Integrate the results into a digital services platform for Portuguese farmers

3 years, starting September 2022

The AIRS project, led by TeroMovigo in collaboration with UBI (University of Beira Interior) and Food4Sustainability, aims to develop a cutting-edge AI and remote sensing-based solution for precise monitoring of grapevine health in Portuguese vineyards. By combining high-resolution images from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with freely available data from the Sentinel-2 satellite, the project will create super-resolved imagery to closely track key crop metrics and assess the condition of grape leaves.

State-of-the-art AI techniques, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), will be employed to enable the automatic extraction of phytosanitary metrics, providing valuable insights into the plants' water needs. This information will be used to optimize irrigation practices, enhance the resilience of the crops to climate change, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

The project is set to be implemented in the vineyards of Adega Cooperativa de Pinhel and will run for a period of three years, starting in September 2022. The results and insights generated by the project will be made accessible to Portuguese winegrowers through a dedicated web portal, ensuring that the benefits of the project extend throughout the agricultural community.
